The Playwrights Lab has refined itself. It is an intensive 10 week program focused on the craft of playwriting and developing new plays. Designed for aspiring writers with works in progress, it offers weekly, one-on-one meetings with resident dramaturg Dylan Southard to address the unique challenges of structure, style and theme that each play presents as it evolves. The Playwrights Lab is tailored to the needs of its writers, providing a place where participants can ask questions, experiment with ideas, and continue to build their stories. There will be a good deal of flexibility and a great deal of personal attention to the creation of individual processes of working and the development of craft technique. The Playwrights Lab culminates in workshop readings of text from each writer.

Dylan Southard will join us once again to guide the work. He will conduct a session from 10am – 1pm, which will focus on a re-examination of plays to clarify the more advanced aspects of playwriting: style, tone, premise, etc. Reworked plays will also receive in-house readings by actors when appropriate. Some of these plays will receive a public reading. Dylan’s experience has certainly added to the process and Robey welcomes and looks forward to his continued participation.

To see Dylan’s career background, please to go The Administraton page. During his tenure with Robey he has served as production dramaturge for The Emperor’s Last Performance by Melvin Ishmael Johnson, Transitions by Kellie Dantzler, The Reckoning by Kimba Henderson, and Pity the Proud Ones by Kurt D. Maxey, all developed and produced through Robey’s Playwrights Lab program under his watch.

Please check your calendars to ensure the resources and commitment of the Robey Theatre Company and Dylan Southard are used efficiently. It is important that attendance be consistent in order to gain maximum rewards.

To Apply:

  • To submit a resume with your writing sample of a one act or full length play, Email Robey
  • Please note that your writing sample need not be a finished work; a first draft of your work is fine.
  • Deadline for submission is Friday, September 8, 2017.

Please Note:

  • The cost is $200 and make checks payable to Robey Theatre Company.
  • Robey accepts 10 actors per session.
  • Please check your schedule before you make the commitment as it affects others working with you.

Your Writing Sample:

Please include a resume or personal history and brief statement of what you hope to achieve or what your goal might be by participating. Artists from other disciplines interested in creating theatre pieces are welcome. If you have something you have written that speaks to what you would be working towards please include. Projects may be anywhere along their developmental path. This could be an idea about a story you wish to develop into a play, the beginning of a scene, monologue, or simply a notion for a play or a first draft of a one act or full length piece. Completion of a work for submission at this point is unimportant. We emphasize process over product. What is important is the beginning of your creative process and providing a glimpse for us to reference. Remember the creative process begins with a thought and that thought deserves development.
